Story: Go to the Clearing is the second Story Quest of the game. It is preceded by Story: Come to My Lab, and is immediately followed by Story: Catch That Pichu. In this quest, the player goes to Shardil Clearing to find their rival.
After leaving Professor Spruce's lab, the player is free to catch Pokémon in Shardil Town and Shardil Clearing. However, should they attempt to go to Route 1, they will be stopped by an NPC. From here, the player can either go back to the clearing or proceed to Route 1 regardless, and the next quest will start. This quest is not marked as complete should the player continue to Route 1, and is instead removed from the Quest Log entirely.
Should the player go back to the clearing, they will find the rival standing near the pond in Shardil Clearing. Upon talking to them, they will ask the player to battle them. The player is able to decline if ythey feel that they are not ready to do so. The story will continue regardless of the result of this battle.
